Nesting
I've spent several hours this month working with a sewing machine, spray paint, exacto knives, duct tape, and good ol' fashioned creativity to make some serious headway on projects for Michael. I'm sick of how long it takes to upload individual pictures to the blog, so I'm catching up with collages. I had an outdated dresser and nightstand that a coworker from Montana gave me, which I purged of drawers, sanded and repainted, and created shelves and drawers for. The dresser will double as a changing table once everything's complete. I also inherited a free mirror with a gold frame from Kevin's grandma and it got spraypainted to match. The shelves and drawers are made from foam insulation, which was about $11 for a giant 4' by 8' sheet, and the fabric I used to cover the shelves was on 70% off clearance! I'm pretty proud of myself for the money I'm saving. Kevin helped me cut out the foam pieces and construct everything. You can see him in one of the pictures. The other project up there is a felt winter hat for Michael that I patterned after an existing hat. It was tricky to figure out how to sew all the pieces together in order to end up with a fully lined hat that had no unfinished seams showing. Kevin and I really love it and think it will look adorable on our little man. It reminds us of a court jester's hat, kinda funny. I'll be sure to get pictures of the finished nursery furniture up here later, but right now it's still in the garage and too heavy for me to move by myself.

I am quite impressed! Where did you get the idea to use the foam? And where did you get the foam? We just got rid of Lyza's dresser to make room for baby stuff and I have been trying to figure out a way to make drawers to go on her closet shelves! And too cute on the hat! You did a great job!
The foam is available at Home Depot or other building supply stores; I got the idea from a different project I did with fabric covering foam (remember the "The Lewises" sign I made for my wedding?). It's the foam that's normally used for insulation, so it's pretty stiff, but can still be cut with a razor or box cutter. No saw required. And you get smoother edges than with styrofoam.
The hat turned out sooooo cute! Can't wait to see the finished dresser. I love the picture of the mirror with your legs in it.
you are amazing!
woo! good job james! can't wait to see what you're like when you're actually nesting!

Wow! Your nest is gonna be fabulous. (I'm a little worried about those two crazies in your blog header photo, though.)
Keep them. away. from your kids.
Okay, maybe it's just one crazy. But still.
